Amanda Filie

Amanda Filie received her Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park in 2016. During her studies there, she researched the kinetic effects that micropore size, mesoporosity and acidity have on the hydrolysis rate of inulin; these studies helped form guidelines for engineering zeolite catalysts that facilitate the decomposition of biomass.

Currently, she is a PhD student in Materials Science and Mechanical Engineering at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Science. As a member of the Friend lab, Amanda investigates catalyst structure and composition en operando, or under “operating conditions.” This information elucidates important parameters of catalyst systems as a way to guide the design of highly selective catalysts, thus increasing the efficiency of new catalyst systems and lowering the carbon footprint of the chemical industry.
